A walk back into time-
Sanchi Stupa

Rising from the plains, 46km northeast of Bhopal, is a rounded hill topped with some of the oldest and most interesting Buddhist structures in India. Located in central part of the state of Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi is the location of several Buddhist monuments, dating from the third century BC to the twelfth century BC.

Today, around fifty monuments remain on the hill of Sanchi, including three stupas and several temples. The monuments have been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1989.

The 'Great Stupa' at Sanchi was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the third century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chhatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics (Dehejia 1997).

Life Away from Life plans to take a walk in the past, exploring the Buddhist monument in the months of January & February 2010

We would also be exploring the famous Udaygiri Caves - cut into sandstone hill, about 20 Gupta period cave shrines dating from AD 320 to 606.
